Today our Pastor continued teaching from Proverbs and spoke on friendships. The sermon felt very timely for me in a few ways, so I thought I’d post it.

He started and ended with a few questions: What are the friendships we have? What kind of friends do we have? What kind of friend are we? …

Proverbs 18:24 says, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

He proceeded to share 9 characters of a good friend. Below I have listed those along with the chapter and verse references in Proverbs.

1. Faithfulness (& being nearby)

You are blessed if you go to someone in confidence & know they’ll keep what is shared between you.

3. Kindness (I will build you up by what I say. I will speak well of you to your face & behind your back. I will try to step aside & consider you first.)

Teach your kids this week to be kind, if you teach nothing else.

4. Do not cosign for a friend (friends encourage e/o to live within their means)

If you walk in forgiveness you will live in forgiveness. If you walk in bitterness you will live in bitterness.

Adults need to focus on forgiveness.

7. Bring out the best in others (They don’t ask you to walk in sin and they look out for each other.)

Friends are supposed to help you in your journey with God. If they continually lead you away from God, they are not your friend.
