Well, we started our garden today. Realizing it’s super late to start, we still had a great time tilling up our ground, mixing soil in, and planting a few vegetable starts and seeds. What a great day!

Last night, Trevor and I had a date night.  We went to dinner and talked about a lot of our thoughts and dreams.  We haven’t done that in a while.  As we sat there, we discussed where we wanted to have a garden sometime and how we could get that started.  We tried to go to the store to get some things we needed, but it was already closed.  So, we planned to make a day of it today since we both had the day off.

We ended up starting a little vegetable garden quite differently than we originally thought, but it was a perfect and fun start.  We picked up a few starts of two types of lettuce and basil.  We already had three tomato plants that have been in dire need of transplanting.  We decided to take the unused portion on the right side of our entry walkway to plant.

Everybody helped in some way.  Amabella and Adeliza started by moving our potted plants or empty pots and watering them over and over with the water from our refrigeration water.  I didn’t realize until MUCH later quite how much water they had used, until I walked into the kitchen and saw the foot wide path of mud all over the tile.  Thankfully, it was the tile and not the wood floor or carpeting!  Trevor raked and cleared things out.  Both Trevor and I spent time tilling up our clay soil as much as we could and mixing soil into it.

The girls kind of took a nap or at least rested about an hour or so.  During that time, Trevor and I were able to do the more strenuous and time consuming part of working with the soil.  I, then, got the girls up to help plant our starts and seeds.  It ended up being me doing most of the planting, but Amabella helped plant the lettuce and both Adeliza and Amabella helped put down some carrot seeds.

The five of us were filthy by dinner time, but it was so fun to work together in our yard.  I’m sure we’ll enjoy taking care of it too.  They already have enjoyed watering out sad little tomato plants and watching our single surviving tomato turn from green to yellow to orange.  It will be fun to see it ripe, be allowed to pick it, and eat it together.  Hopefully we’ll have more to pull from our garden in time.  If not, we will be prepared for next year.
