Our Summer Adventure Has Begun
With the start of summer vacation I knew keeping to a schedule would help all of us. So we have a flexible “summer school” schedule where we work daily on a memory verse, Bible class, calendar, math, penmanship, writing, reading, and typing. It has gone very well, and we have had lots of fun outside and other learning opportunities.
Rest time is also a must in our day. They need it and I definitely need it. Especially with most of us sick lately, extra rest is good. Usually Ama just sits in her room and reads. Boxcar Children books are her current favorite. She gets through one every few days. The rest usually sleep still or try to.
In addition to our summer school, rest time, eating (which always seems to take up half the day), and general play time, we have lots of time for extra fun.
Yesterday we played in water and then really scrubbed the deck. Today they learned how to play croquet, and we learned more about human anatomy: the skeletal system and how babies grow and develop. It was inspired by a conversation before bed about how we are made in the image of God and that we have been fearfully and wonderfully made.
My sweet, inquisitive Adeliza is so fascinated by how things work that it didn’t surprise me at all when she said that she wants to know what bodies look like on the inside. She wants me to take her to where people have let their bodies (after they died) be used for people to learn about how the body works on the inside. I tried not to let on how mortified I would be to have to dissect a dead body, and instead encouraged her by taking time to learn in ways we can right now. We looked up images and videos on the computer and started with the skeletal system and the growth of a baby during pregnancy. She was fascinated, but now I need to get lots of hands-on learning games to help her learn.
Once I finally got kids in bed, now extra late, everyone seemed extra needy. Adi was upset because she’s afraid because there’s nothing under her bed. So I laid in bed with her and we prayed and talked about how we don’t need to be afraid, God is with us and if we tell him what we are scared about he will give us peace. Ama needed to come in to check on when she gets to go spend some special time with Auntie since it’s June now. Azri just couldn’t sleep, so he came to the couch and laid down until I carried him back to bed. Ava sobbed because there’s a spider in her room again (a daddy long leg) and she’s too scared to sleep. So I brought her to my bed and snuggled next to her for a bit. After putting her back to bed she awoke, saw the spider still there and needed me to take it out. When it was too hard for me to easily reach it by one leg to put outside, she said to squish it. I reluctantly did, since I happily keep those guys in my house. However, for my sanity, I have one more sleeping kid and one less spider.
My life with kids is definitely an adventure.
