What’s in a Name?

tl

For those of you in our lives when I was pregnant with Amabella and when she was born, you know that naming a new chid is a responsibility Trevor and I don’t take lightly.  (Or at least can’t make a quick decision on.)   Amabella was born on a Saturday and named the following Wednesday.  Adeliza was born on Thursay and named on Satruday.  This was a big improvement.  Perhaps baby Smith #3 will leave the hospital with a name, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

In preparation of the birth of both of our girls, we racked our brains to make a list of name ideas.  With Amabella the stress of choosing the name overwhelemed me during the pregnancy, so we finally let go of having a name decided before we got to the hospital.  I was so glad because it gave us the freedom to wait to see her and make our decision.  When I first saw Amabella, I thought of the name Bella.  I knew Trevor wasn’t really a fan of the name.  But when all was said and done, her name intentionally had Bella in it.  This time with Adeliza, the first name that came to my mind was Eliza.  Trevor completely agreed.  And again, as it turned out, her name has Eliza in it.

The meaning and purpose of each name was very important for us for both girls.  As a review with Amabella Louise, here are her names and what they mean:

Amabella:  Ama (born on Saturday), Mabel (loveable), Amabella (Loveable, amiable), and Bella (beautiful)

Louise: Family name – first daughters have the middle name of Louise (for the past 5 or more generations)

So, for Adeliza, we knew her name must hold the same significance: naming her when we saw her, have meanings we agreed with and/or valued, and some family significance.  Here is the breakdown of Adeliza Emeline’s name:

Adeliza: Adi (ornament, adornment, or noble kind), Adeliza (noble, of kind spirit), Eliza (my God is  a vow, devoted to God, the chosen) (Eliza is also a family name: her great-grandma and great-great grandma)

Emeline: Emi (beautiful, blessed with beauty, blessed), Emeline (peaceful home) (Emeline is also a family name we came across twice in our family tree)

This time Trevor and I very easily agreed on the name decision.  We agreed that her name needed to have a harder sound to it like Eliza, Adeliza, or Adelade and we both agreed on Adeliza.  The middle name was a little harder, but Emeline was a favorite of mine during the pregnancy, yet I had never considered it for a middle name.  When Trevor mentioned using it as the middle name, I knew it was perfect.

I really wanted both my girls to know that they are beautiful to us and even more importantly before God.  So, I was thrilled that both had beautiful as the meaning of part of one of their names. In addition, family is very important to us, so including family significance was crucial.  Lastly, having a name that suite them in sound and hopefully in meaning as they grow is essential.  Already we know Amabella is loveable and amiable.  We trust that Adeliza will have a kind spirit, be devoted to God, and  promote a peaceful home.

We love our girls and are so thankful for them!
